CELEBRATIONS

Top Frog – We had five “Top Frogs” (star students) in our classroom this week. Each student shared an “All About Me” page, sat in a beach chair all day, and was the line leader!

Quote of the Week – Each week, our class learns about a new quote and spends the whole week trying to embody that quote. At the end of the week, Miss Hutchison awards a friend from our class who really shined with that quote’s energy from throughout the week. This week’s quote went to MIA for her kind heart and her willingness to make others smile!

Fort Day Celebration – We had lots of fun building forts in our classroom on Friday – first graders even got to eat lunch in their forts! 🙂

OUR LEARNING:

Reading– We are learning about how to be great reading partners. Reading partners HELP each other without just telling the answers, give each other reminders, and talk about the books they’re reading together.

Writing – We studied George McClements book, “The Night of the Veggie Monster,” which is a small moment story. We tried to do some of the same cool “craft moves” that George McClements did in our own writing, like making words POP, adding ellipses (…), and showing the exact actions of our characters.

Math – We’ve learned about two big strategies for solving addition problems this week: picture drawings and circle drawings. By drawing circles or pictures to match the numbers, we have a visual drawing of how many items there are altogether. We also practiced “counting on” with a partner.

Word Study – Our special word study buddy, Rasheed, brought us lots of snap words to study this week! Snap words are words we can read in a snap. We learned HOW to make a word a snap word, and then we tried it by sorting words into different sounds, writing our words, and more.
