Popcorn Words: We practiced the words “with,” “big,” “had,” and “bad” throughout these past two weeks. We’ve also been learning about the “H” brothers (sh, th, ch)…we can find these sounds in lots of words, including some of our popcorn words. Ask your child to find those sounds in words they read at home!
Math Stations: We have done quite a bit of review and practice over these past two weeks in preparation for our unit wrap-up and assessment this coming week. We’ve focused on….teen numbers, simple addition and subtraction, writing our numbers 1-20, and classifying shapes.
Reading Workshop: This week, we practiced two new reading superpowers: PICTURE POWER and PARTNER POWER. Picture power encourages us to look at the pictures to predict the tricky words we might find when reading. Partner power reminds us to help one another when reading to make sure what we say matches the words on each page. The more your child practices popcorn words at home, the more comfortable he or she will become with reading books!
Writing Workshop: We are continuing to write small moment stories in our classroom! The students are becoming more comfortable with picking their own topics, adding details and labels to pictures, sounding out their own words, and telling the beginning, middle, and end of their stories. This week, we introduced an editing tool: a writer’s checklist. People use checklists to make sure they have everything they need so they don’t forget anything. We are learning to go back and check our writing to make sure we don’t forget any important details, either.
Happy Birthday: On February 1, we celebrated Stuart’s 6th birthday! Happy birthday, buddy. Thank you for the awesome goody bags!!
Top Frog: We loved having Lauren as our Top Frog this past week!
Mystery Readers: We had two more mystery readers visit our classroom these past few weeks! The week before last, Eilley’s mom came to read to our class the story of the Nightingale. Then, this past Wednesday, Jace’s grandma came and read us two fun pattern books. Our kindergarteners get so excited to see their loved ones in our classroom!!
Lunch Buddies: One of my favorite parts of the day is when I get to take the time to talk with my sweet kindergarteners! With this in mind, I started a special event in our classroom: Lunch Buddies. Each day, one kindergartener gets to have lunch with me and a friend (if they want to). I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE spending this quality time swapping stories and laughing with these friends!!
