Week 30 Highlights

OUR LEARNING:

Popcorn Words: We practiced the words “him” and “jump” this week.

Math Stations: This week, we went back to review some specific skills from Unit 4 to ensure that we are all experts on these concepts before moving on to the next unit. Your child’s Unit 4 Math Test and rubric will be coming home on Tuesday! We also started Unit 5 by drawing “teen scenes,” or drawings where we found a group of 10 objects within the teen number. We also played a new 3-D shape puzzle game, too!

Writing Workshop: We began a new type of writing this week: How-To Writing! We learned that writer’s write how-to pieces to give the reader step by step directions about how to do something. We made a list of all the things we know how to do! Then, we began writing our first how-to piece together: How to Carve a Pumpkin. We had to cut and paste the steps in the correct order and use transition words (first, next, then) to help our reader carve their own pumpkin!

Reading Workshop: In reading this week, we started a new unit focusing on Characters! First, we reviewed what a character is, and specifically what a ‘main character’ is. Then, throughout the week, we discovered different ways that we can learn more about a character: by how he/she looks, by the things he/she says, and by the way other characters act around him/her. We’ve also been building up our independent reading stamina – this week, we made it up to 14 minutes of quiet reading from our book boxes!! Incredible!!!

CELEBRATIONS:

Top Frog: We had two top frogs who filled up our estimation jar this week! Lyla brought in 16 crayons, and Drew brought 24 marshmallows. What objects will we estimate next week??

Outstanding Kindergartener: Mrs. Reagan delivered another “Outstanding” to our classroom on behalf of one of our kindergarteners. Brianna was recognized for making green choices, following directions, and staying safe at school. We have so many amazing kindergarteners in our classroom, and I’m so glad they get recognized for their hard work!!

Fort Day: Our kindergarteners had lots of fun at our fort party on Friday! They used problem-solving skills to work together. We had quite the collection of unique forts around our classroom! Thanks for sending in a blanket with your kindergartener.

Mystery Reader: Lauren’s dad and little sister surprised our class as this week’s mystery readers. Since Lauren’s uncle lives in Seattle, they read us a book about an adventure throughout Seattle! Thanks for visiting our classroom.

NOTES FOR PARENTS:

Rock Collections: Please don’t forget to send in a rock collection with your kindergartener: collect 10-12 rocks that are all different sizes, shapes, textures, etc. Collections are due on April 20!

Field Trip: Our class will be going on a field trip on Wednesday, May 9, and we are looking for chaperones to join us for a fun-filled day! A detailed note about our field trip will be coming home with your kindergartener on Tuesday!
