Week 32 Highlights

OUR LEARNING:

Popcorn Words: We practiced the words “some” and “come” this week. Keep practicing these popcorn words at home as often as possible!

Math Stations: We are still working through Unit 5 and solidifying those important number sense skills. This week, students worked on writing teen number equations, drawing “tiny tumblers” on math mountains, finding the “hidden 10” inside of teen numbers, and writing partner equations.

Writing Workshop: We concluded our How-To writing unit this week! This week, I gave the kindergarteners much more independence in their writing. We walked through two more stories together: How to Make a S’more and How to Wash Your Hands. We discussed ideas for each sentence, and then the kindergarteners wrote their chosen sentences on their own. Then, later in the week, the kindergarteners decided they were ready to plan and write all by themselves!!! They wrote about How to Brush Your Teeth and How to Make Hot Cocoa COMPLETELY on their own!!! I was blown away with their effort and writing!

Reading Workshop: In reading this week, we continued learning more about characters! We specifically talked about comparing characters we see in books. (1) Some characters are in more than one book; (2) some books have more than one strong character; and (3) some characters make us think of other characters. We’ve also been building up our independent reading stamina – this week, we made it up to 18 minutes of quiet reading from our book boxes!! Incredible!!!

CELEBRATIONS:

Top Frog: We had five top frogs who filled up our estimation jar this week! Lauren brought in 34 pieces of candy; Annie brought in 47 candy canes; Quinn brought in 54 hair pins; Karsten brought in 53 gum balls; and Jace brought 18 nerf darts. What objects will we estimate next week??

Mystery Reader: Sophie’s dad surprised our class as this week’s mystery reader. He read us two books about puppies! Thanks for visiting our classroom.
