Week 34 Highlights

OUR LEARNING:

Popcorn Words: We practiced the words “my,” “by,” and “one” this week. Keep practicing these popcorn words at home as often as possible!

Math Stations: This week, our math stations focused on comparing numbers. We used words like “greater” and “less” to compare groups of objects. We also added or subtracted objects to make equal groups.

Writing Workshop: We did lots more opinion writing this week! This week, kindergarteners wrote their opinions about the following topics: favorite special, ice cream in a cup or cone, and summer or winter.  Kindergarteners independently come up with two reasons to support their opinions and then restate their opinion at the end. They are doing INCREDIBLY with this unit!

Reading Workshop: In these next few weeks, we’ll be especially focusing on building up our reading stamina. This week, we made it to 20 minutes! We also had fun reading with our stuffed animals on Friday.

Living & Non-Living Things: We’ve been watching our lima bean plants grow this week – some have even begun to sprout! On Monday, we sorted lots of different items into categories: Living or Non-Living. This helped us review the characteristics of living things: they move, breathe, grow, and eat. We saw lots of living things on our field trip, too! On Friday, we began making a special plant craft  – we are labeling each part of a flower as we create it.

CELEBRATIONS:

Top Frog: We had four top frogs who filled up our estimation jar this week! Brody brought in 62 paperclips; Finn brought in 36 jolly ranchers; Brianna brought in 87 hair bows; and Eilley brought in 19 hair ties. What objects will we estimate next week??

Butterflies: Annie gifted our classroom her butterfly garden this week so we could watch the butterflies hatch and grow! Two hatched on Friday – – – we will release them next week once the weather warms up.

Bubble Party: Our outstanding kindergarteners earned another party this week….a bubble party! But because of the rain on Friday, we were only able to have half of our party. We learned how to blow bubbles with some bubble gum! Next week, we will have the other half of our bubble party by going outside to blow bubbles.

NOTES FOR PARENTS:

Spring Sports: Does your child play a spring sport? I’ve heard lots of our friends share their excitement about soccer, softball, and more! I’d LOVE to come cheer your kindergartener on at a game!!! If you have a free moment, please send me their game schedules so I can show them some support outside of school, too!

Kindergarten Olympics: Mark your calendars! Kindergarten Olympics will be held on Friday, June 1st. Please turn in the volunteer slips by Friday, May 18 if you would like to volunteer.

May Book Orders: The last packet of book orders for this year came home with your kindergartener on Friday! Orders are due by May 25.
