Week 6 Highlights

OUR LEARNING:

Popcorn Words – Our popcorn words this week were “to,” “do,” “you,” and “purple.” We wore purple, made a “purple people eater” craft (just like the song!), and practiced writing and finding our popcorn words throughout the week. September’s popcorn word flashcards and mini-books came home with your child on Monday – these are great tools for practicing sight words at home!!

Math – We have had lots of time to practice writing our numbers this week! This is a tricky skill for many kindergarteners, and one that I encourage you to practice at home (on dry erase boards, with crayons/markers, or with pencil and paper). We also began telling addition and subtraction stories with pictures. For example: “There were 5 cows; 2 cows walked away, so now only 3 cows are left.”

Writing – We are now writing and tracing full sentences below our pictures! These kindergarteners are amazing!!! We are learning how letters, words, and punctuation all go together to make a sentence. This week, we wrote about our fire safety visit, purple day, and

Reading – We learned all about reader’s workshop this week. During reader’s workshop time, kindergarteners read independently (“back to back”) and with partners (“elbow to elbow & knee to knee”). Our class LOVES reading time, and students even got to go book-shopping to pick some “good fit” books to add to their book boxes. We also learned about the parts of a book, including the title page, front & back covers, and the author & illustrator.

Handwriting: We began learning how to write our lowercase letters this week with the Straight Line Family. We practiced writing the letters l, t, & i on whiteboards, in the air, and in our handwriting books.

Fire Safety Visit – On Wednesday, our class had a special visit from three Georgetown Twp firefighters! They taught us all about fire safety: calling 911, checking smoke detectors, stop-drop-and-roll, and how to yell for help if you’re stuck in a fire. We also got to check out all of the parts of their uniform, and we explored the different tools and compartments on the fire engine. Our class had a blast!!! Thank you to our firefighters for being so kind and generous in visiting with us.

CELEBRATIONS:

Top Frog – We loved having Evan as our Top Frog this week. Next week’s top frog is Quinn! Your child will have a chance to be our top frog soon, too.

Mystery Readers – On Wednesday, Miyah’s grandma surprised our class and read these books to us: The Itchy-Saurus and No, David! Thank you for sharing your love of reading with our classroom!

Walk-a-thon: The rain didn’t stop us from having fun for our annual walk-a-thon on Friday! We did some 80s-themed Zumba dancing, walked the hallways of our school, and had a dance party in our classroom. As a reminder, all walk-a-thon donations are due by Monday, October 8.

Notes for Parents:

  • Remember to send in two snacks with your kindergartener each day. We have hungry bellies, and these snacks give us energy to keep learning!
  • Please keep your child’s library book in the labeled plastic bag when returning it to school. Once we check out our books at the library, all of the books get placed into one basket, so the labeled bag is the only way we know whose book is whose. Thanks so much for your help! 🙂

Upcoming Dates:

  • Monday, October 8 – Art, walk-a-thon donations due
  • Tuesday, October 9 – STEAM, Library
  • Wednesday, October 10 – Music
  • Thursday, October 11 – P.E.
  • Friday, October 12 – P.E., Early Release @ 12:15 pm, Wear Black & White
