We Love Reading!

Here in the Frog Room, we absolutely love reading time! Genuinely, this class always asks for reader’s workshop and the chance to check out new books from our classroom and school libraries! Here are some updates and ways to include reading in your child’s home experiences, too.

  • Scholastic Book Orders: This ordering program offers very affordable (usually $1-$4) books that are brand new and perfect for your kindergartener! Plus, every order you place helps our class earn points to get more books, too. You can order online at this website, or you can order using the paper magazines I send home each month. Our class code is R86B7. October book orders are due this Friday, October 19.

  • Class Book List: Interested in knowing what books we’re reading here at school? Miss Hutchison keeps a real-time, daily-updated list of all of the books we’ve read in our classroom throughout the year. So far, our class has read over 70 books already!! Here is a link to our book list. Maybe you’ll find some titles that you’d like to read at home, too. 🙂

  • Donors Choose Project: Donors Choose is an organization that helps public school classrooms get resources they need through the support of donors. I wrote a project proposal in the hopes of getting some leveled books for our class full of readers! If you feel inclined to donate to our project (or pass info along to others who may like to support us), please check out this link to our project site.

  • RAZ-Kids: Our class has a set of five student iPads, and we are beginning to use these during our literacy centers each day. Our favorite app is RAZ Kids, which is purchased by our wonderful PTC. I highly encourage you to use this app with your child at home, too. This is a great way to give your child exposure to digital literacy skills at home while reading books that are on his/her specific level! Here are the steps to get started! This will take you less than 5 minutes. 🙂
    1. Download the app: Kids A-Z (also known as RAZ-Kids)

    Free Download!

    2. Open the app and type in the following username:

    ahutchison16

    3. Find your child’s name from our class list.
    4. Your child’s password is the apple icon.
    5. Once logged in, go to the “Level-Up” section.
    6. Now your child can choose any of the stories on the app to listen to, read independently, then answer comprehension questions.

I’m sure it won’t take long for your kindergartener to be self-sufficient with this app! Your child will be growing as an independent reader in no time. 🙂
