Week 20 Highlights

I hope you stayed warm while enjoying this long weekend of snow days! Please make sure to send your kindergartener in FULL winter gear this week, since it will be cold, snowy, and slippery!

Here’s a snapshot of our learning from last week:

OUR LEARNING:

Popcorn Words – Our popcorn words this week were “he,”and “she.” We were introduced to the “H Brothers,” who all make special sounds when their letters get put together (sh, th, ch). Our literacy centers this week focused on these digraphs.

Math – We continued our math rotations this week while learning about the following topics. We sorted pictures into categories and noticed which objects didn’t belong in given categories. We also continued adding and subtracting within 5, as well as writing our numbers from 1-20.

Writing – We continued our new unit: SMALL MOMENT WRITING. For this unit, students write a story about one small moment from their lives. This week, we all wrote another small moment story together as a class. They drew pictures of the three parts of their story and sounded out words to write sentences for each section. They were so excited to bring these home and share them with you! This is CHALLENGING work for our kindergarteners, and your encouragement means the world to them.

Reading – In reader’s workshop this week, we learned how to best use our READING SUPER POWERS! We practiced reading fluently (smoothly, not like a robot), looking at punctuation marks, and retelling the most important parts of stories. We’ll be ready to begin a new reading unit when we come back to school.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day – On Monday, we learned about one of our famous American heroes in celebration of Dr. MLK Jr. Day. We read a special magazine that taught us about the ways people were treated before MLK’s influence and after. We then learned about the ways that we can be kind to others and treat everyone fairly, no matter what! We talked about MLK’s “I have a dream” speech, and we shared some dreams that we have for the world. We even made MLK medallions to remind us to be kind and share peace.

CELEBRATIONS:

Top Frog – We loved having Colton as our Top Frog this week. We will pick a new Top Frog later this week.

Lunch Fun – This week, I have been eating lunch in the lunchroom with our class and they are LOVING it! It’s so fun to just spend time talking with them and giving them some extra love and attention!

Mystery Reader – Colton leapt into his dad’s arms when he came to read to our class on Monday, and Jordan was so excited to see his mom as our mystery reader on Thursday! Thank you both for surprising our class and reading to us!
