Week 5 Highlights

OUR LEARNING:

Popcorn Words – Our popcorn words this week were “is,” “his,” “this,” and “green.” We wore green, made a green froggy craft, and practiced writing and finding our popcorn words throughout the week. One of our favorite parts of the week was reading Little Blue, Little Yellow and mixing our own blue and yellow play-doh to make green!

Math – We began learning about how to compare numbers this week. We used words such as “bigger,” “more,” “fewer,” and “less” to describe two different numbers. We also finished learning how to write our numbers this week, by writing #8 and #9 on whiteboards and in our number writing books. Your child brought home their number writing book to share with you!

Writing – This week, we took our writing to the next level by adding a sentence below our drawing. The sentence tells the story of our picture. For example, we wrote “This is my snack,” and then we drew a picture of our snack and labeled it! Our writing continues to improve as we keep practicing!

Reading – We learned how to be book lovers this week! We practiced being a book lover and showing reader respect by taking care of our books, reading quietly, and making sure not to be a “book bully.” Additionally, we’ve continued our shared reading with a poem for Ff.

Literacy: During literacy time this week, we really started diving into the structure and function of letters! We learned about the three different handwriting lines and how some letters are small, some are tall, and some fall below the lines. We also distinguished between letters / numbers and letters / words / sentences.

Buddy Time – We got together with our buddies this week for a special reading time! Each of our fifth grade buddies picked out a library book to read especially for their kindergarten buddy. We LOVED spending part of the afternoon reading and talking with our fifth grade friends from Mr. Cooley’s class!

CELEBRATIONS:

Top Frog – We loved having Micah as our Top Frog this week. Next week’s top frog is Evan! Your child will have a chance to be our top frog soon, too.

Mystery Readers – On Monday, Nathan’s mom came and read these books to us: The Day the Crayons Quit and Paw Patrol: Sea Patrol to the Rescue. Then, on Wednesday, Colton’s mom visited us again (Colton’s dad got stuck at work!) and read Spunky Little Monkey, Firehouse, and Clark the Shark. Thank you for sharing your love of reading with our classroom!

Eagle Spirit: Our class had a blast at the Eagle Spirit celebration on Friday! Friends from the high school helped us get excited for the big homecoming football game!
